Unfortunately, each new school term brings more suicides of teens. Online bullying is more prevalent than ever.
While it is very hard to stop someone once they are on the path of suicide, we can try to make people more aware of the harm done through senseless words, either texted, spoken or repeated. Two books I would recommend to help teens become more aware of their actions are Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher and By the Time You Read This, I’ll Be Dead by Julie Anne Peters.
In Thirteen Reasons Why Jay Asher creates a series of tapes that a teen who had committed suicide leaves in his wake. Each person who gets the tapes does not know who received the tapes before or why he/she was slated to receive the tapes. The book makes the reader conscious of behaviors he/she has done without being aware of the consequences of his actions. I would love to see everyone read this book, not just teens!!!
By the Time You Read This, I’ll Be Dead by Julie Anne Peters recounts the blog of Daelyn Rice, a girl whose been bullied since she was in kindergarten. One day, a fellow student named Santana begins to sit with her after school and won’t leave her alone. One person can make a difference in another’s life. Encourage people to read these books and help save a life today.
